A brief history of the area

In 1657, a group of four free burghers were awarded land south of Table Bay near the Cape of Good Hope. The location was named "Het Ronde Doornboschjen" by Jan van Riebeeck, the Dutch commander at the Cape, after a peculiar cluster of thorn trees on the banks of the Liesbeek River. By 1670, this had been shortened to Rondeboschje in the Dutch East India Company's (VOC) records.

Despite its early roots, Rondebosch was not recognised as a distinct village or as a suburb of Cape Town until the 1830s.
