Waterfall is a large area in KwaZulu Natal, situated approximately 36 kilometres from Durban Central. This countryside village is close enough to all the amenities and facilities that Durban has to offer, but still far enough removed from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.
Property in Waterfall is made up of predominantly spacious freestanding homes set on sizeable or large plots. These country homes are built in a slightly older style, lending them a rustic charm and character and allowing them to fit in perfectly with their stunning surroundings.
Waterfall is especially appealing to family buyers as it is removed from the inner city pollution and high crime rates. In Waterfall you can offer your children the freedom to play outside safely, loads of fresh air and a peaceful environment all within a tightly knit community.
Brief History
Although not called Waterfall back then, the area that is known as Waterfall today can be traced back to 1851 when the 6000 acre farm Langefontein was subdivided into different divisions - the area that was named Upper Langefontein is today known as Waterfall.
The Dinkelman family - who owned most of Upper Langefontein - was responsible for bringing electricity to the town and commissioned the building of the Inanda Road.
While Waterfall today boasts many facilities, there were only two shops by 1900, the nearest school in 1910 was in Hillcrest and the nearest doctor was 18 Km away in Pinetown.
In 1959 George Rowles acquired a portion of the Waterfall Farm and ran a prime herd of dairy cows. In 1967 he sold his dairy herd and began to develop Waterfall as a residential area with a shopping complex.
Climate
As part of the Upper Highway area, Waterfall is known for being cooler than its coastal neighbour of Durban. The climate is mostly mild and generally warm and temperate.
The rainfall is quite significant - with rainfall even in the driest months. December is the hottest month with an average temperature of 23 degrees Celsius, while July is the coldest month with an average temperature of 13 degrees Celsius.
Schools
The Waterfall schools include Curro, Waterfall pre-primary, Waterfall preparatory and Waterfall College.
Healthcare, shopping centres and distance from key points
The area offers many medical facilities and hospitals such as the Crompton Private Hospital, Link Hills Medical Centre, Hillcrest Hospital and Busamed Private Hospital.
The newly built Watercrest Mall offers the residents of Waterfall everything they need and want from grocery shopping, multiple clothing retailers, fast food and restaurants as well as a movie theatre.
The M3 that will take you right into the heart of the city centre in just over 30 minutes is easily accessible and the King Shaka International Airport is a 45 minute drive.
Restaurants and special attractions
Waterfall offers many restaurants, including Indian, Portuguese and Japanese cuisine. There are many steakhouses, bistros and delis, bakeries and fast food outlets to choose from.
There is a lot to do for young and old in and around Waterfall, including a water park, Inanda dam for fishing and camping, a picnic spot in Krantzkloof Nature reserve, an animal farm and a wildlife park amongst others.
