Klerksdorp is an integral part of the beating heart of the North West province. Over and above being renowned as a mining town, it is a major contributor to agriculture, with maize, sorghum and ground nuts being farmed in the area. With crime rates that are lower than those in other parts of South Africa and a pleasant, quiet way of life that is sought after by many, Klerksdorp is well-loved by its residents.A brief history of the areaKlerksdorp was founded in 1837 by the Voortrekkers, and quickly became a collection of smallholdings. The town owes its name to the first magistrate of the area - Jacob de Clerq. Later in the 1800s, gold was discovered in the district, leading to thousands converging on the small village and transforming it into a much bigger town. Klerksdorp was a significant site in the Second Boer War of 1899-1902, with heavy fighting taking place in the area and a concentration camp being set up here.Schools in the areaLooking for an excellent school in Klerksdorp?
