The suburb of Hatfield was named after Dr William Henry Hatfield, a British-born doctor, who arrived in the region in the late 1800s and built a farm and a small hospital. Until the early 1900s, the area was mostly rural, when it started to be developed for residential use.

The weather in Hatfield, as in the rest of Pretoria, is mild and pleasant year-round. However, temperatures tend to drop at night compared to the daytime. Summer temperatures average 30°C between October and March. In July and August, the temperature drops to roughly 20°C, bringing a chillwave.Schools in the area
