Ferndale, Randburg

A brief history of the area

The area that is known today as Randburg was originally formed by four farms known as Klipfontein, Driefontein, Olievenhoutspoort and Boskop. The earliest settlers were the Boer pioneers who set roots in the area in the 1850s and 1860s. The farm Boskop was eventually subdivided and a part of it was proclaimed as Klipfontein.

Further subdivision in 1891 resulted in two important Randburg suburbs. One section of the Klipfontein farm was bought by Scotsman William Gray Rattray in 1891. He renamed his portion Craighall after his birthplace in Scotland and another portion of Klipfontein was bought by business tycoon Sir Abe Bailey which he renamed Ferndale.

The distance from Ferndale to Lanseria International Airport is 21,6 km (42 minutes away) via Malibongwe Drive and residents can reach Johannesburg CBD within 39 minutes (19,8 km) via Barry Hertzog Avenue.

Ferndale has a temperate highland tropical climate with an average annual temperature of 21.26 ºC. Ferndale typically receives about 57.8 mm of rainfall each year with January being the wettest month.
