A brief history of the area
Yzerfontein's name translates from Dutch means "Iron Fountain". It has its origins in the 1930s when the Katz family bought the Yzerfontein farm. The farm eventually developed over the years into a small harbour town.
Of note, Yzerfontein has the only two remaining lime kilns in South Africa. If you're driving on the R315 before reaching the town, they are easy to spot. At the time, the Dutch settlers built them to burn mussel shells to create cement for building. They were declared national monuments in 1980.

Yzerfontein can take flights from Cape Town International Airport which is (98,2 km) via the R27 (roughly 1 hour and 13 minutes). Yzerfontein is also close to other tourist hotspots: Darling is 25,4 km away (roughly 23 minutes) and Langebaan is 54,8 km away (roughly 38 minutes). This makes Yzerfontein an ideal starting point to enjoy the rest of the West Coast's attractions.
Climate
With its pleasant climate, Yzerfontein is a delight to enjoy the gorgeous fynbos, beaches, and private game reserves around town. The highest average temperature in Yzerfontein is 26°C in January and the lowest is 16°C in June. During the annual flower season (around August through to early October), the town's flowers burst into full bloom.
Schools in the area
Although Yzerfontein has no local schools, children are still able to attend classes in nearby Darling. This town offers a stellar education experience with the likes of Darling Pre Primary, Laerskool Darling Primary, Vooruitsig Primary School, and Darling College. For tertiary varsities, you can look further afield to Cape Town and its surrounds.
Healthcare in the area
Although small, Yzerfontein has general practitioners in and around town who can attend to your medical needs. Prescriptions can be easily filled at Mike's Pharmacy. Yzerfontein Veterinary Clinic will treat your pet like their own and are known for their friendly and efficient service.
