Malgas is located in the Overberg region of the Western Cape of South Africa. The little town is just 30 minutes from Swellendam and the De Hoop Nature Reserve. It sits on the west bank of the Breede River, one of the largest rivers in the country with a significant variety of fish and birds.
Malgas was originally an important inland harbour when significant trade was done on the river. Today, Malgas is known best for its surviving hand-driven river Pont, the last in operation in the country and a remnant from when Dutch settlers used to build floats to cross the river. You can still negotiate the Breede River by pont between the east and west banks at Malgas.
The area is a nature lover's paradise, particularly for fishing and bird watching, as the estuary of the Breede River sustains an abundance of fish, including Cob, Spotted Grunter and Garrick, and attracts fish eagles, ospreys, fish owls and kingfishers. Coupled with this is the serene beauty of the surrounding mountainous and fynbos-rich backdrop which makes Malgas a popular and peaceful weekend escape and respite.
The area offers a range of properties, many with river frontage. Seeff Malgas offers unique local area insight and our team of real estate agents can assist with all your property needs, from sales and rentals and investments.
