Somerset East is an attractive and historic little town, situated on the fringes of the Karoo in the malaria-free Eastern Cape of South Africa.
Somerset East is a pretty town with its many gardens forming a green oasis under the iconic Boschberg Mountain. It is located a short distance from the N10 main highway between Port Elizabeth and the South African interior, as well as being on one of the main routes to Graaff-Reinet.
The town is picturesque, friendly and quiet with little traffic, making it easy to explore on foot. You will find restaurants, coffee shops and places to relax in Nojoli Street, the main street of the town. A popular draw-card, is the Walter Battiss Art Museum which houses the largest collection of this artist's work to be found in Africa.
A walk to the Glen Avon falls is a wonderful experience, with deep pools below the waterfall to cool off after the walk, just far enough for the inexperienced walker not to be discouraged. This waterfall is one of the largest drops of water on private land. Other activities include bowls, birding, canoeing, fly fishing, camping, 4x4 trails, gymnasiums, hiking, horse riding and river tubing. The yearly Biltong Festival draws thousands of visitors with several hundreds of stalls, numerous South African artists and lots and lots of Biltong.
