The total capacity of Cape Town’s dams has just reached 70% - a 0.9% increase in one week. The average water consumption over the past week has dropped by 21-million litres per day.
The City of Cape Town recently announced the plan to lessen water restrictions, going from Level 6B to Level 5, at the start of October 2018. However, the national government’s prerequisite of 85% dam level capacity is the target for further removal of water restrictions.
Cape Town is just 15% away from the goal set by the Department of Water and Sanitation, which is considered the ‘safe zone’ before more water usage will be allowed once again. The stern efforts of the Capetonian residents over the past year to conserve water are still paying off.
As rainwater still runs off catchment areas and along rivers to the dams, they will continue to fill up as long as residents remain patient and committed to their water-saving efforts. The constant improvement of dam levels in the Western Cape should spur on residents and tourists to do their part in water conservation.
