For mountain biking and cycling enthusiasts, there's nothing better than the opportunity of being in a scenic setting and one with nature as you cycle. Meandering through the valleys and mountains of Cape Overberg you can appreciate the surroundings of the peaceful town of Onrus and its outlying areas.
Enjoying Hemel en Aarde
There are route markers that are placed along the tar road that goes up the valley and alongside the river. The first road that winds up is flat and turns into gravel thereafter. From there you can choose to cycle on the routes and decide what challenge you're after.
One of the highlights of Hemel en Aarde's trails is the scenery and experiences you will be exposed to. Picturesque vineyards, orchards and farmhouses are woven into the trails, as well as mountain ranges and lush greenery.
The routes you can navigate
Black route - this involves a bit of a difficult climb that zigzags through the blue gum plantations. This is a technical trail that tests your endurance and challenges you as a rider (62 km)
Green route - this route is a smooth, single-track at the edge of the Onrus river where you will have to dodge trees and plants, but makes for an enjoyable ride. It's the shortest route, popular with kids (7 km)
Blue route - winding its way past the popular breakfast place of Plaaskombuis, this route goes toward the river and back to the start. This trail is perfect for families and beginners. (12 km)
Red route - like the black route, this one involves a steady climb up the valley and traverses the banks of the Onrus River Gorge. (25 km)
What to expect
You will likely have to deal with a few steps along your trails where you will have to carry your bike, but nothing that the average cyclist isn't used to. The Volmoed Farm will be stumbled upon at some point and you will be able to take in the impressive waterfalls. When you feel you need to take a breather and stop for a bit, you can indulge in a wine tasting! The wine village boasts top-notch wineries like Bouchard Finlayson, Southern Right, Newton Johnson, Hamilton Russell and more.
From the top of Rotary Drive, you can expect to enjoy some whale watching. Onrus beach is a short distance away, where you can relax and partake in activities such as kayaking, kiting, sailing, beach volleyball, swimming and a host of others. The beach is also famous for hosting world-champion surfing and bodyboarding tournaments. If you're lucky enough to be spending your holiday at Onrus beach during the months of November through to January, you may be able to fit a few competitions into your schedule.
Trail rules and regulations
The trails are maintained regularly to ensure they are kept in tip-top condition for cyclists. For this reason, it is essential that you acquire a permit to access the trails. The permits can be obtained from various cycling stores in Hermanus and Village Cycles near the beginning of the trails. You will not be allowed to ride from sundown to sunrise, as many of the trails are on private farms and land. You are advised not to wander through the trails alone, but with a cycling partner or group and be aware of other cyclists, hikers and runners on the route.
