Die Oog is a lush nature conservation area, bird sanctuary and seasonal wetland, rich with various birdlife, reptiles, amphibia and granite fynbos.
There is a dam that fills in winter and surrounding grassland that provide the perfect habitat for the thousands of birds that choose to congregate here. It is an absolute bird watcher’s paradise with sacred ibis, cattle egrets, reed cormorants, cape weavers, helmeted guinea fowl, yellow-billed ducks, grey herons and pintailed whydah to name a few. Die Oog is also an important breeding site for the endangered Western Leopard Toad.
Visitors to Die Oog are able to take leisurely strolls on the pathways, relax on one of the many benches located throughout the area and take advantage of the viewing areas perfect for spending some quiet time in the outdoors and getting back in touch with nature.
A voluntary non-profit organization called The Friends of Die Oog is dedicated to the maintenance, improvement and preservation of this beautiful heritage site. To join the Friends visit their official website to find out details about their annual subscription and get involved in their various activities. The Friends welcome donations, grants and sponsorship for various ongoing projects and continued maintenance of the area.
The Friends also encourage visits by schools to take advantage of their educational programme that aims to raise awareness in children about the bio-diversity of the area, introduce them to bird identification and to enlist them in the protection and care of such sites.
