Discover Jakkalsfontein Nature Reserve, West Coast

With only a limited number of coastal nature reserves with housing estates available along the coast, these tend to be very popular as they offer the best of beach and pristine nature reserve living according to Cynthia Cousins, Seeff’s agent for Jakkalsfontein.

The 1700ha Jakkalsfontein Cape Coastal Nature and Beach Reserve for example ranks amongst the best kept secrets for its stunning location and nature living. Much like Martha’s Vineyard, it is characterised by houses set among the dunes, she says. The estate has won awards for its conservation efforts. It is about an hour’s drive from Cape Town on the way to Yzerfontein.

It has a 4km private beach and is home to 107 houses clustered close to the beach. The estate is fully enclosed with restricted access and excellent security. The houses are styled like overturned fishing boats with white-washed exteriors and green roofs. Most come with beautiful beach house interiors, open rafters and American shutters for the ultimate beach lifestyle.

The estate is characterised by its wide selection of fynbos and strandveld, abundance of birdlife and roaming buck including Grysbok, Steenbok, Duiker, Ostrich and even Lynx. There are lovely hiking, cycling and horse riding trails in the estate as well as a resort centre with a clubhouse, 25m solar heated swimming pool, tennis and squash courts and play area for children. As with the rest of the West Coast, the estate turns into a flower carpet during Spring.

The houses vary in size and prices range from around R4m-R7m on average for a beautiful beach house with four bedrooms suites, quick beach access and 180-degree views from Table Mountain to Dassen Island and Yzerfontein. The estate has a top price of around R16.5m. It appeals to a broad range of local and international buyers looking for residential and holiday homes and is also popular for rental properties. Property values have appreciated by around 40%-60% over the last five years.

Yzerfontein and Darling are close by for medical emergencies and basic necessities while the Blouberg/Parklands area is just over a half an hour’s drive away, says the agent.
