Eyethu Hout Bay Skatepark

The Eyethu Skatepark is a fantastic initiative and crowdfunded community skatepark for underprivileged kids in Hout Bay.

Eyethu is a Nguni word that means 'ours'. It highlights the spirit of the initiative which is one of togetherness and shared ownership and partnership.

The driving force behind this community initiative is The Hout Bay Rotary Club. The skatepark will be built at the new Hout Bay sports field and will be a much needed safe public space for community use and youth development within the area. Experienced skateboarder, Matthew Johnson and architecture masters graduate, Lawden Holmes approached the Rotary Club to propose the Skate Park and the idea was fully embraced by the Club.

The park itself will encompass an area of about 900 sqm and will include various areas that are suitable for different skill levels. The design and plans also makes provision for a netball court and spectators lounging area. Here is a proposed visual for the skatepark:

The project gets together during the monthly Sunday Market and every Saturday afternoon as it waits for the final project to be built. If you would like to donate and help, you can get involved during the monthly meets by teaching skating, helping with registration, and by donating snacks and boards. You can also help spread the word on social media.
