Great gifts for new homeowners

Everybody loves a housewarming party and the opportunity to wish homeowners well in their new home, but guests are often stuck for ideas about what would be great gifts.

Seeff's agents round up a few useful ideas:

Plants or a garden centre voucher
House plants are always a great idea but be sure to check that the homeowner doesn’t suffer from allergies which could be triggered by house plants. If there is a garden, then a voucher to a local garden centre could be a great idea.

Braai tools and accessories
Most new homeowners would appreciate receiving braai tools and accessories such as tongs and forks, an apron and oven mitts, a few braai spices and even a nice dish for marinating meat. You could also add a bag of charcoal and firelighters to your gift hamper.

Toolbox
Even in a brand new home, there will be the need to drill a few holes or tighten some screws, put on new plugs or hang a few pictures. A toolbox with a few essentials such as a hammer, pliers, assorted screwdrivers, nails and screws and a tape measure would be a most welcome gift to most new homeowners.

Garden Tools
If there is a garden, then garden tools and accessories will always be a welcome gift as these are often items which are at the bottom of the shopping list for new homeowners. Basics would include shears, clippers or pruners, a spade, fork, rake and some garden gloves.

DIY and décor books or Apps
A handy DIY guide or décor book (or App) would always help new homeowners. Look for guides which offer step-by-step guides for basic repairs and maintenance or for easy DIY projects such as creating your own compost or veggie garden. Using soft furnishings to update your décor is always a good guidebook.

Cookbooks and cooking Apps
New homeowners are often keen to explore their cooking skills in the kitchen and may well be most appreciative of a few cookbooks (or a Cooking App), especially with interesting and new meal ideas. Better yet, choose a book or App by a well-known celebrity chef, or recipe books for healthy or exotic meals.

Spices and condiments
In keeping with the cooking theme, you could consider a nice set of spices or other handy condiments as these are also items which new homeowners will no doubt appreciate. It will inspire them to enjoy their new kitchen and new home.

First Aid kit
Cuts and minor kitchen burns might not be something that new homeowners would think about and a First Aid kit is a great and thoughtful gift. These are available from places such as Clicks and Dis-Chem or Cape Union Mart and would include basic wound dressings, bandages, plasters, gauze, a disinfectant and so on.
