Groot Constantia celebrates its 333rd year of uninterrupted wine production

South Africa’s oldest winery, Groot Constantia, is celebrating their 333rd year of wine production. Founded in 1685, the winery is set to mark this historic occasion with the creation of a commemorative vintage from this celebrated harvest. The vintage will be crafted in honour of the over three centuries of uninterrupted wine production.

“This is an achievement that cannot be claimed by any other wine farm in South Africa – nor in the Southern Hemisphere,” says Jean Naudé, General Manager of Groot Constantia. “The Groot Constantia trademark is also one of the oldest surviving trademarks in the world today.” Naudé further explained that this proud label, winner of 82 gold medals since 2003, has left its mark throughout history with some notable figures. “Aristocracy made sure that they had enough stock of this acclaimed and precious product. It is recorded that King Louis Philippe of France was a regular client of Groot Constantia with several repeat orders. A glass of Groot Constantia wine was one of Napoleon’s last wishes before he died in exile on St Helena.  The British Royal family as well as Frederic the Great of Prussia, have also all appreciated the Groot Constantia wine.”

In conjunction with the 333rd anniversary, Groot Constantia has further reason to celebrate with their official declaration of being a World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Conservation Champion. In receiving this honour, the Groot Constantia works to promote awareness and has participated in conservation-focused farming practices in partnership with the WWF as part of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative.

Visiting the estate is a fun-filled day as there are on-site restaurants with exciting menus as well as a cellar tour, wine tastings and exploring the Iziko Museum and the surrounding grounds.

Visitors who would like to take the tours at their own pace can take advantage of the three audio tours that are now available. These self guided tours will take you through the grounds, the museum, the cellar and the vineyard. They are free of charge and easily downloaded onto your smart phone.
