The Hout Bay Trail is an annual event, taking place in winter, and is known as one of the oldest and toughest trail runs in South Africa.
The Hout Bay Trail Challenge tests runners' fitness, endurance, technique and strength. The course winds around the mountains surrounding Hout Bay and is around 40 km long with over 2500m of climbing. This wildly popular race is divided in three legs and you are able to enter as an individual or as a team of three with each runner doing a single leg.
The race's start and finish is at the Hout Bay Yacht Club and your first climb is up Karbonkelberg for Leg 1. Leg 2 starts from Suikerbossie Restaurant, then tackles the back of Table Mountain and heads towards Constantia Nek. Leg 3 from Constantia Nek to Hout Bay is the easiest but it is recommended that you don't take it too quickly.
The trails are kept in good shape by Table Mountain National Parks and the views and surroundings are absolutely breathtaking. All participants are encouraged to make a small donation to the Table Mountain National Parks. The race also promotes and asks for contributions, no matter the size, for the Bright Start charity which seeks to give children from low-income families the opportunity of a quality education.
There are only 250 openings for the race and they go quickly so if you would like to participate you will need to register as soon as entries open. Keep an eye on their official Facebook page for updates.
Be sure to visit their website for entry fee prices.
