Is your story taking you to an exciting, new destination?

This helpful moving checklist will help you plan your next move:

So, you have taken the very exciting leap to move to a new house, neighbourhood or even city. While it will most certainly be one of the most exciting times of your life, it can also be the most stressful. Planning your move and ensuring that you take care of the necessities though will take the stress right out of the move.

Seeff has just the right advice and a checklist ready for you:

Make a list

– the first thing you need to do is a make a checklist of everything that needs to be done as part of your move. The internet is often a good source of checklists, but you will need to customise it to your local needs.

Get organised

– once you have your checklist together, the next step is to order and date all of the activities. It is best to date it a day or two earlier than the actual due date to ensure that everything is taken care of. If you are moving to a new city or province, then the moving company is often an excellent source of information and check lists.

Utilities and services

– be sure to list all of the utilities and services needed for your new house, from electricity to telephone, internet, satellite television and security. You will also need to ensure that you cancel everything in your current location. Pre-plan and book all the installations for your new house well in advance and ensure you follow up a day or two before the time. Ensure that all services are disconnected when you vacate your house.

Packing and moving

– be sure to plan the packing process carefully. Mark all boxes clearly with the room and brief contents description. That way it will be easy to direct it to the relevant room in the new house. Be sure to plan that you have enough boxes, sealing tape and pens to complete the task. Keep basics out for use, especially the night before and don’t forget about putting a box of necessities at the top of the pile for when you arrive at the new house.

Moving company

– be sure to choose a mover that comes with a recommendation. These days, there are many small operators who can help with local moves, but when it comes to a major move, especially to a new city or province, you will want to do some background checking to ensure that you choose a credible company.

Forwarding address

– although we live in the digital world, you should also remember to make arrangements for a forwarding address for your mail. If there are no deliveries in your new neighbourhood or area, you will need to find the nearest post box facility and make the necessary arrangements.

Insurance, banking and other necessities

– don’t forget to update your insurance company on your relocation and new address. If you are moving to a new town or province, you may also want to move aspects such as banking to your local branch for convenience sake.
