Life in Observatory

Observatory is Cape Town’s most bohemian suburb, known affectionately amongst locals as Obs. It is best known as a student neighbourhood with most of the students attending the nearby University of Cape Town.

Where is Observatory Located?
The suburb of Observatory is situated on the north-facing lower slopes of Devil’s Peak.

Things to see and do in Observatory
Observatory is easily one of the most pet friendly suburbs in Cape Town. The area hosts a variety of dog friendly paths along the river bank as well as a superb dog park.

If star gazing is your hobby or something you would like to check out, the South African Astronomical Observatory hosts the public every second and fourth Saturday of the month at 8:00 pm.

For the foodies and lovers of fine cuisine, Observatory has a myriad of places to choose from to satisfy even the pickiest of palates. The variety of cafes, coffee shops, bars and restaurants include all the local favourites such as Mimi’s, OBZ Café, The Foreign Exchange, Hello Sailor Bistro, Café Ganesh, A Touch of Madness, and Mango Ginger Coffee Shop. For a truly unique experience, the Wild Fig Restaurant will send you back into the 18 th century, farmhouse style with traditional pub lunches as well as modern Mediterranean and Asian meals.

It’s always sunny in Observatory even when it’s raining out; the weather cannot stop your adventure craving heart when you venture into CityRock. The indoor adventure centre hosts a large bouldering area and high walls for rope climbing so you can get your climb on anytime. If climbing boulders and walls is too tame for you and you’re looking for something different you’re welcome to climb up onto the trapeze or a high wire at the South African National Circus School.

Wanting to improve your long or short game, perhaps both? Observatory is home to the River Club Golf and Conference Centre. With a 9-hole course and a 90 bay driving range you won’t have to wait long to play a quick round with your friends or clients before having a lunch.
