MyCiTi adds new routes and bus stops

The City of Cape Town’s public bus transport service, MyCiTi, will launch over 25 new routes and stops at the end of October 2018. While citizens will be able to travel to more destinations around the city, most of the Southern Suburbs are still not part of the proposed new routes.

Among the new routes and stops, popular inner city trips will be extended. More stops in Table View, Atlantis and Century City will be added and some underutilised stations will no longer be served, such as Lower Loop, Lower Long and Foreshore on DF Malan.

MyCiTi is also planning to launch more direct routes, such as to the V&A Waterfront, Sea Point, Camps Bay, District Six and Zonnebloem. A direct route will run from Table View to Duynefontein via Melkbosstrand.

Three new stops will be added in Parklands East and a number of new stops will be implemented to the routes in Atlantis, including stops in Beacon Hill and Sherwood. All of the new routes and stops will be temporary to allow MyCiTi to monitor the demand and sustainability before creating permanent structures.

MyCiTi conducted customer surveys

“Our transport planners recently conducted a review of the MyCiTi service and the passenger demand on the MyCiTi routes,” says Mayoral Committee Member for Transport and Urban Development Brett Herron. “We also undertook customer surveys to determine how we could attract even more commuters to the service,” he says.

“The outcome of the review and the survey informed us of where we needed to tweak the service to respond to our commuters’ needs and to better match the service with the passenger demand,” Herron explains.

The planned new routes and stops will add an extra 150 000 km to the MyCiTi service area.“By adding another 150 000 km to the service each month, we will bring the MyCiTi service closer to more commuters and to where there is a demand,” says Herron.

MyCiTi strives for convenience

The new routes and stops will hopefully make travelling faster and more convenient for people who use the bus service. “Cities are constantly evolving and Cape Town is no different. People move around and adjust their lifestyles, and public transport services around the world must respond to these changes,” explains Herron.

MyCiTi transports nearly 70 000 passengers on a daily basis. Since its launch in May 2010, the bus service has recorded over 89 million passengers.
