A new modern art museum will be opening on the border of the Steenberg wetland system. The Norval Foundation will boast one of SA’s largest private collection and its aim is to make art widely accessible to local and international visitors.
The museum will showcase the work of local and international 20th and 21st-century artists, including Gerard Sekoto and will also include the Edoardo Villa Estate Collection and the Alexis Preller Archive. Other highlights include the work of exceptional artists such as Irma Stern’s "Arab" (1939) and Sydney Kumalo’s "St. Francis of Assisi" (1962), Wim Botha’s "Prism" 5, 12 and 7 (2014) and Serge Alain Nitegeka’s "Structural – Response II" (2014).
Care has been taken in the building of the museum to preserve and restore the beautiful surrounding wetland system. In keeping with the preservation and celebration of the area the building will incorporate natural light and be topped with a modern, floating, wing-like roof structure that will provide solar energy to the centre. The exhibition spaces have also been specifically designed to emphasise the exquisite views of the wetlands and surrounding natural area.
The Norval Foundation will include an outdoor amphitheatre, a sculpture garden, a research library, a children’s playground and an upmarket restaurant and bar.
If you would like to attend the Private Garden Party Fundraiser to celebrate the museum’s opening on Friday, 27 April 2018 and the Public Opening on Saturday, 28 April 2018 please mail info@norvalfoundation.org or phone them on +27 (0)83 277 2062 for more information. The proceeds from capital donations will be used to secure the foundation for future generations.
