Survival tips for stay-at-home parents

Being a stay-at-home parent, while ultimately rewarding, can, at times, be lonely and exhausting. Here are a few tips to stay sane, happy and healthy.

  • Your first step is to get to bed early and wake up before your kids do. Developing this routine will help you have a few valuable moments to yourself in the morning.

  • Implement morning quiet time. This is a great way to help the whole family be mindful and peaceful going into their day and will play a big part in helping create less stress.

  • Plan each day the night before. Decide on what your kids will wear and eat, and what activities you are going to be doing. Create a schedule and try to stick with it as far as possible. By doing this, you essentially become your own best friend.

  • Keep your home organized and tidy. An uncluttered space makes for an uncluttered mind.

  • Self-care is vital. Don't stay in your pj's all day. Shower and get dressed. This will help you feel good and inspire more productivity.

  • Don't get caught up in a cycle of complaining. Make it a point to keep a gratitude journal or affirmation list. Staying positive will be beneficial to both you and your child.

  • Get out of the house. Don't stay in with your kids all day. Plan outdoor activities, trips to your favourite places and playgroup dates.

  • Keep up to date with local kiddie friendly events and activities.

  • Visit the library with your children. Libraries often have reading hours for children and it's the perfect opportunity for you to read to them or alongside them.

  • Exercise. Staying active will help reduce stress and anxiety and give you more energy.

  • Don't be afraid to ask for help. Friends and family will be more than happy to help out and give you a bit of a break every now and then.

  • Make time in the week or on the weekends to get out on your own and do something you enjoy. Maintain hobbies, learn something new and socialize with friends.

  • Don’t be too hard on yourself. Break the rules every now and then. Be impulsive. Appreciate the little things and don’t take life too seriously.
