There are few events more exciting and daunting at the same time than moving to a new house or flat. The whole thought of having to pack, clean and then unpack and settle is enough to send anyone into a bundle of nerves. As with most things in life, planning ahead can make the move part of the excitement.
Here’s how to ensure your move is as exciting as your new home:
Make a list – the best advice, is to make a list of everything that needs to be done and to work with this check-list as you go along. Start with every aspect that needs to be packed and booked and all services that need to be taken care of. Keep a list of all service provides with their contact numbers with your moving check-list for convenience.
Service connections – be sure to make a list of all service connections to terminate in the old property and which ones to transfer or reconnect in your new home. Check up on the progress of service call logs at least 14 days and again a week prior to the move to ensure that it is scheduled in time. This should include any telephone, satellite TV and internet services as well.
Reliable movers – be sure to choose a recommended and reliable moving company to avoid the stress of late comers or being let down on your moving day. A local area move can be fairly stress free, but it becomes especially important to vet your moving company when you have to move to another part of the city or even another province.
New schools and traffic – if you are moving with children who have to join a new school, be sure to take them on a bit of a drive by beforehand so that they can already start feeling excited about the move. Be sure to also check out the traffic in the area, especially if you have to commute for work as there is nothing worse than misjudging traffic and being late on your first day in your new home.
Cleaning service – be sure to get a cleaning service to do a thorough house and yard clean on the day that you move out and also ensure that you can expect to move into a clean house as well. It is very stressful to have everything planned only to find that you first have to clean your new house before you can start unpacking.
Boxes and markers – pack each room into its own set of boxes and mark all the boxes with the relevant room and contents. That way, it is easy to tell the movers where to put the boxes when they arrive at your the new home. By marking the boxes with the contents, you also know which ones to unpack first.
Security and windows – be sure to check that your new house is secure and always get the curtains and window coverings up as soon as possible so that you can continue unpacking and setting up your new home in a secure and cosy environment.
