Switch up your genres
Don’t stick to the same genre over and over again. Appeal to different tastes by switching up the kinds of books you read.
Stick to your schedule
Make sure that your book club stays on schedule on a particular day of the week with a specific start and end time.
Go digital
Start a Facebook group, GoodReads group and create an online calendar for all upcoming events, books, and any other announcements that you may need to make. Send out Whatsapp reminders.
Do your research
Don’t just randomly pick books to read. Read online reviews with an aim to consistently collectively read good books that will leave everyone satisfied.
Group size
Decide early how big you want your group to be and stick to it. A good, close-knit group will develop which will be much more sustainable in the long run.
Defined rules
Define how your group should run with regards to simple refreshments and snacks, who will host, and how books will be chosen.
Share responsibility
Don’t shoulder all the pressure or expect any one person to have the lion’s share of the responsibility to avoid burnout.
Book length
If you have a club that reads the same book, stick to books that are less than 400 pages.
Stick to the topic of books
Don’t allow members to turn the club into a therapy group. Keep discussions relevant to books read and to-be-read. Keep things light and fun.
Movies
If a movie comes out that has been adapted from a book you’ve read make arrangements to see it as a group.
Holiday
Take breaks every now and then so that your club remains a joy and doesn’t become a chore that you dread.
