Tips To Make Your Home Pet Friendly

Pets are more than just animals, they are our furry children. Making your home pet-friendly is equally as important as child-proofing your home to ensure that everyone is happy and safe living there.

Here are a few tips to ensure that your pets are safe and happy in your home:

Inspect your home

Getting down on all fours will give you a much greater perspective on any potential dangers that may be lurking in your home.

  • Make sure that all window cords, wires and electrical cords are safely hidden away.

  • Keep all medication and food stored away, and be aware of what foods are toxic to animals. For example, caffeine, grapes, chocolate, raisins, xylitol, nuts and avocados can be especially poisonous for dogs and must be kept out of reach.

  • Always keep trash covered or disposed of immediately.

  • Plants can also be detrimental to your pets’ health. A quick google search will tell you which plants are safe to have in the home.

  • Pets can often maneuver cupboards open to access home cleaning products, pesticides, fertilizers, and other hazardous items. Consider latching them shut.

  • Keep your toilet lid down

Provide special pet-friendly spaces in your home

Make sure that you create a specific area for your pet that is well-equipped with food, water, toys and a comfy bed. By doing so your pet won’t feel the need to seek refuge in places that may be potentially dangerous for them.

Pet-friendly flooring and furniture

  • Go with fabrics and flooring materials that are hardy, stain-resistant, cost-effective and less work for you in the long run.

  • Ensure that your cats have a scratching post and that your dogs have enough chew toys.

  • Make use of throws and pet-friendly pillows.

  • Carpet isn't the best choice for pet owners. Always opt for laminate, wood or tiles when it comes to flooring.

It’s also vitally important to keep your animals clean and brushed and to have a few lint rollers at hand.
