Tokai Library

The beautifully quaint Tokai Library is a book lover’s dream. It is also home to a beloved Craft Market that specializes in selling handmade goodies, including everything from jewellery to tasty food.

The library hosts occasional Saturday teas, book sales and various other events. There is also a conference/function room that is available for hire.

Tokai Library had its beginnings in a garage on Lismore Avenue and was known as Lismore Library. The library was moved to another garage in the early 1950’s where it remained for about 30 years. The library was then moved again to the T R Motors building on Tokai Road.

Douwe van Popta, then chairman of the Tokai Residents’ Association, then proposed that a new and permanent library be built. The proposal was actively followed up in 1989 by Stan van Wyk, subsequent chairman of the Tokai Residents’ Association, and Yvonne Wood, Councillor of the Local Council of the Constantia Valley.

After negotiations, the local council approved a budget of R1,500,000 for the new library. Due to her passion for the project, Yvonne Wood became project manager, and together with architects, Michael Rudolph and Steven Lennard, building of the Tokai Library began in August 1991. The library was officially opened by Councillor Andrew Ross-Munro on 18 May 1992.

There is a volunteer organisation known as The Friends of the Tokai Library whose main aims are to promote a close relationship between the library and the surrounding communities, promote public awareness of the functions, services and needs of the library and to help maintain the standard of services offered.

Anyone who uses the library may volunteer to become a member and assist in a variety of ways such as gardening, shelving books and reading with young children to name a few.

Funds are raised by membership fees, which are currently R30 per year and by other fundraising methods, such as recycling glass and paper. Application forms are available at the library.
