Twin maisonettes in heritage home in Berea marry heritage and contemporary lifestyle

The Berea is a premium destination for savvy buyers, offering exclusivity, charm, convenience (top schools, hospitals and access to major arterial roads) as well as great value. Another interesting and unique facet of the Berea is the number of heritage homes in the area.

The KwaZulu Natal Heritage Act (Act 4 of 2008) protects buildings that are over 60 years old. Amafa KwaZulu-Natal is a statutory body responsible for identification, conservation, protection and administration of Heritage Resources in KZN.

Says Roger Hoaten, Co-Owner of Seeff Berea, quoting AMAFA: “Places of cultural significance enrich people's lives, often providing a deep and inspirational sense of connection to community and landscape, to the past and to lived experiences.”

A development at 371 Currie Road is an example of successful application of the Act by AMAFA coupled with excellent work by a developer. Hoaten explains: “This developer was fully cognizant of their responsibilities and respectful of the heritage value of the property developed at this premier address. Two maisonettes – each over 320 m2 in extent – have been built with contemporary internal layouts whilst retaining the exterior that has heritage value. They will be sold unfinished to allow purchasers to complete the interiors with the fixtures and fittings of their choice.

“The current exterior and an artist’s impression of the possible outfitting and furnishing of the interior of one of the units reflect how well the developers melded a heritage protected building with the requirement for contemporary spaces carefully designed to suit modern lifestyles.”

The views of Durban’s city and skyline from the verandas of the two units are breathtaking.  Aluminium doors open the expansive open-plan living areas and main bedrooms onto the verandas and their views. Each maisonette offers four bedrooms, all en suite, with expansive open-plan living areas.

Drive-in access past the guard house leads to double garages with direct and level access to each maisonette. There is parking for at least 9 cars besides the garages. Staff accommodation is available at the rear of the property.

On sale at R4.35 million (lower maisonette) and R4.65 million (upper maisonette) excluding VAT, these properties represent excellent value and a unique opportunity.
