Even though Day Zero may be pushed back indefinitely it’s still important to be waterwise and have a garden that is environmentally sustainable.
Here are a few alternative options to consider:
Artificial lawn
Synthetic grass (or artificial lawn) is becoming an increasingly popular choice for the water wise gardener as absolutely no water, fertilizer or tools are required and you have a lush-looking green lawn all year round. Your lawn also remains a durable play area for children and pets, and the drainage holes in the backing make it easy to keep clean by simply hosing it down.
Ground covers
Evergreen ground covers such as Gazania, Aptenia, Delosperma and Plectranthus neochilus are drought tolerant and are excellent alternatives to water thirsty lawns.
Stepping stones
Creating pathways with stepping stones, with waterwise plants such as lavender, indigenous plants and succulents planted alongside, are a gorgeous, modern alternative. You can also make use of small stones and gravel in the surrounding area. If you choose to add plants make sure to add plenty of compost to your soil to retain moisture and feed your plants.
Gravel
Another great alternative for larger areas are draining chips/ gravel.
Wooden decks
A large deck to reduce and replace your lawn area is a great option, especially if you’re into having friends and family around for braais on the weekend.
Xeriscaping
Xeriscaping is landscaping and gardening that reduces or eliminates the need for supplemental water from irrigation. It’s the new buzz word for designing a smart, waterwise garden. Plants are chosen for their suitability to the local climate and the garden is designed to avoid losing water to evaporation and run-off.
