Dana Bay Conservancy is of the belief that if you decide to move to our beautiful piece of paradise, you are buying into the conservation of our area. With that comes expectations, responsibilities and benefits.
The Committee is working together with their members, businesses and residents on very important aspects, of which we will discuss one project in more detail in this article. You are encouraged to join us with our projects wherever possible.
In our previous article, we requested that you regard the green belts in Dana Bay as small National Parks. They are one of the most beautiful features of Dana Bay, and the home to all our natural fauna and flora.
Littering is unacceptable, including any dumping in the green belts. Even old building material has been found at times, having been illegally dumped. Please ensure no dumping of alien vegetation is done in our Green Belts {incl. Kikuyu grass}. We are part of the Cape Floral Kingdom and Fynbos Biome. Our endemic plants must be saved from extinction. We request that you keep your stand clean of any litter, as the strong winds tend to blow the litter into the stormwater drains and green belts.
The municipality has employed a contractor to clean the sidewalk and sweep the streets during the week. We respectfully ask that you pick up any rubbish you see and not leave it just for them.
Keeping our beaches & streets free of waste and litter is essential to maintain the health and wellbeing of our area. Litter on beaches pose a threat to the wellness of sea life and natural biodiversity. It is unsightly! The picking up of dog excrement is a necessity on all street sidewalks and beaches.
We are very proud to introduce you to one of our many projects:
Beach Clean-ups:
The Conservancy Committee arranges regular beach clean-ups on Saturdays, according to the low tide calendar. Choosing low tide times assists participants to reach more areas of the beach including the high water mark. We always encourage local businesses to join this project and even have impromptu competitions on who picks up the most rubbish.
We provide bags, gloves and pencils with a printed list to be completed on all kind of trash picked up. We rotate to the different beaches after every second event. In that way we can monitor improvements or deterioration in terms of the results. We then send a final report to Cape Nature and Plastics SA with what has been picked up. In this way data of trends can be examined and recorded. You will not believe the kind of trash we find!
As a visitor or resident of Dana Bay and / or a member of our Conservancy, the future of our fauna, flora and marine life is regarded as your personal responsibility! Join the fight to save our area and our planet…
