In an effort to curb Cape Town’s plastic waste problem, Woolworths has sent 500 000 plastic bottles to Gauteng to be recycled.
Due to the drought in Cape Town and the concern about the quality of municipal drinking water, there has been a massive rise in the sale of bottled water. This has put pressure on local recycling facilities which simply cannot cope with the amount of plastic waste that needs recycling.
The South African National Bottled Water Association and the PET Recycling Company approached Woolworths for assistance. In response, and in order to avoid the bottles ending up in landfills or on the streets, Woolworths has offered to send 500 000 plastic bottles (constituting about 15 metric tons of plastic waste) to a recycling facility in Gauteng at their expense.
The plastic will be recycled back into Woolworths Food packaging.
