Auckland Park lies north of Johannesburg's CBD and west of Braamfontein on either side of Empire Road, where it becomes Kingsway. Although it is one of Johannesburg’s older well-established suburbs, it has become a trendy and upmarket suburb of the city. Auckland Park was laid out in 1888 and developed by John Landau, a New Zealander. He named the area Auckland Park as it as it reminded him of his home in Auckland. The names of the streets, such as Richmond, Twickenham, Ditton, Wargrave and Kingston, were all related to places along the Thames.
