Fairland, Randburg

Fairland is an older suburb in Johannesburg and its 18 square kilometres falls into an area that was once the farm known as Weltevreden, which extended roughly between Randburg and Roodepoort. The original farm was allocated to three men in 1861- Cornelis Johannes Smit and two cousins, RG Badenhorst and HJJ Badenhorst. Smit died in 1891 and his son, also Cornelis Johannes, inherited 500 acres of land, which later became the suburb of Fairland. The Weltevreden Farm remained in the same family for 131 years.
